World Patient Safety Day 17 September 2023 – ‘Engaging Patients for Patient Safety’

In acknowledgement of the World Patient Safety Day 2023 theme of ‘Engaging Patients for Patient Safety’, Michaela McAleer, the Chief Executive of the Pharmaceutical Society NI commented:

“We welcome the World Health Organisation’s message on World Patient Safety Day 2023 that when, ‘patients are treated as partners in their care that significant gains are made in safety, patient satisfaction, and health outcomes. By becoming active members of the health care team, patients can contribute to the safety of their care and that of the health care system as a whole’.

“The message that patients must be active partners in their care is central to our current Professional standards of conduct, ethics and performance for pharmacists in Northern Ireland (the Code) and has been further enhanced by our collaborative work with patients and others in our current renewal of the Code.

“Patient safety is central to everything we do in regulating pharmacists and pharmacy premises in Northern Ireland. It is critical to our role that patients and the public are an integral part of our regulatory structure from the Council meeting to our fitness to practise committees.

“On this World Patient Safety Day, we at the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland, rededicate ourselves to continuing our efforts to better engage and work with patient groups and I would take this opportunity to offer an open invitation to patient groups to talk to us about our work and to become involved to ensure patient safety in Northern Ireland”.
