Pharmaceutical Society NI responds to Francis Report.

At the Council meeting held on 26th September the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society NI approved its formal response and action plan in relation to the Francis Report and the subsequent Berwick Report.

Speaking after the Council meeting President Ms Jacqui Dougan said, “The terrible events in the Mid Staffordshire General Hospital, as reported in the various Francis enquiries, shocked everyone. Whilst it is true that these events were centred on a specific hospital, it is incumbent on all healthcare regulators and healthcare professionals to recognise the learnings from these events and to act.

Today the Pharmaceutical Society NI approved its formal response to the Francis Report and within this document we have identified 12 workstreams for the coming months. I would encourage everyone to read this response and engage with us as we seek to implement these recommendations”

Continuing Ms Dougan said, “Ultimately, as a regulator we are here to protect the public, and we can only do this with the help and support of the public and in cooperation with the profession.

In particular I would draw everyone’s attention to the review of the Pharmaceutical Society NI’s Code of Ethics/Conduct. Over the next few months this will be a crucial part of our work and I encourage all interested parties to contribute to this piece of work.

Together we can ensure that the standards expected are correct and together – patients, public and professionals we can ensure the highest standards for all.”
