The Medicines Act 1968 regulates the manufacture, distribution and importation of a) medicines for human use, b) medicines for animals and c) medicated animal feeding stuffs. The Act also deals with the registration of retail pharmacies.

The Pharmacy (NI) Order 1976 constitutes PSNI and the regulation of pharmacists & fitness to practise proceedings.

The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 controls the export, import, production, supply and possession of dangerous or otherwise harmful drugs.

The Health and Personal Social Services (NI ) Order 1972 outlines the rights and obligations of chemists and doctors who provide pharmaceutical services.

The Health Act 2006 changes the provisions of the Medicines Act in relation to the issue of responsible pharmacists & the absence from & supervision of pharmacy premises.
