 Reflection

 Planning

What specific learning need(s) have I identified?
How have I identified these learning need(s)?

Checking monthly nursing home medications and pre-reg commented on the amount and variety of feeds the home was getting and asked several questions about these products.

I realised I don't know a lot about these feeds.

This pharmacist has described why they need to know more about these products but what do they specifically need to know? What were the questions from the pre-registration student that they could not answer?
Being specific about what you need to know at this stage makes the learning more focused.

REMEMBER TO BE SPECIFIC!

What activity/activities could I undertake to
meet this learning need(s)?
When do I plan to complete the
activity/activities?

I plan to complete the NICPPET pack on clinical nutrition by the end of this month.
I will also attend a Nutricia presentation on 20th December 2004.

The planned activities can be realistically achieved and are set with a time limit which is motivational for the pharmacist.

Evaluation

Action

Did I meet my learning need(s)?
How has my practice changed as a result of
my learning?
Have I identified any further/additional learning
need(s)?

I now feel more confident about this area of practice. No further action required.

This stage lacks detail because the prompt questions have not been answered.
Did they meet their needs?
How did they apply their learning in practice? Did they change their practice? Did they feedback to the pre-registration student and review feeds with them? Did they have discussions with the nursing home staff /GP about the products?

What have I learned?
What didn't I learn that I expected to learn?

I have learnt:

  • Indications for enteral/parenteral nutrition.
  • Differences between the make up of feeds
  • Mechanisms by which drugs interact with enteral feeds
I also learnt the differences between Nutrison products and about their newest product which is being indicated for patients with leg ulcers/burns as it is high in protein.

From reading this section you can see what the pharmacist learnt. Although it would be useful to include a brief example beside each of the three bullet points as per the cycle on the Falls Incentive.
