On Wednesday 9th November there will be a Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland to consider amendments to the existing byelaws. The meeting will be held at Society House, 73 University Street, commencing at 7.30pm and followed by a Profession Forum meeting to discuss the findings of the recent consultation on the Responsible Pharmacist Regulations.

Agenda of the SGM here
The need for amendment of the byelaws has been highlighted by legal advice in respect of current and forthcoming changes to the manner in which pharmacy is regulated in Northern Ireland. Legal advice here.
The Government White Paper “Trust, Assurance and Safety” (2007) suggests the separation of regulatory and leadership functions and describes the need for professional regulation to be independent of the profession. The creation of an elected Professional Forum Board now provides separation and accountability to the membership for leadership functions. It is therefore proposed to remove existing byelaws that could conflict with the independence of regulatory activity. Byelaws which have no such effect will remain.
